APPLICATION GUIDE

Packing Tape for Recycled Cartons

Use the real carton surface to assess tape closure. Recycled-content claims alone do not tell you which tape construction will work on a particular board.

Do not select by recycled percentage alone

Manufacturer ranges include tapes specifically intended for recycled corrugated cartons, but this does not mean every recycled board needs the same adhesive. Start with the actual sealing area: unprinted board, heavy print, coating, surface dust and visible damage are different conditions to record. Keep board supplier and carton batch details when available. A photograph helps communicate the problem; it cannot establish a board's composition or a tape's adhesion performance.

Document the failure location

Photograph the closure before removing the tape. Note whether the tape edge lifted, the full strip detached, board fibers remained on the adhesive, or the tape backing split. Record which side or seam failed and how long after sealing it was noticed. Preserve a failed carton and its tape label for review if practical. Do not assume all of these observations have the same cause or that adding thickness will resolve them.

Review the packing operation

Record carton fill, flap alignment, manual dispenser or case sealer, sealing pattern and packing-room conditions. Check the equipment's maintenance and application instructions with the operator. Describe dust or contamination rather than covering it up during a trial. If you change carton preparation for the sample test, record that change; otherwise the result may not represent normal production.

Choose representative cartons for sampling

Use cartons from the board batches you expect to buy, including the difficult surface you are trying to address. Identify each sample and candidate tape. Agree the quantity of trial closures, inspection times and handling conditions with the buyer's quality team. Include photographs and counted observations, not only a verbal approval. A single hand-sealed empty box is useful for first impressions but is not proof for a filled shipment.

Keep the approved combination traceable

Record the accepted tape construction and dimensions alongside the carton reference and sealing process. If the board supplier, coating, print coverage or packing conditions change, decide whether the closure should be checked again. Keep approval dates and the person responsible for accepting the result. This makes a later issue easier to investigate without immediately blaming either the carton or the tape.

Prepare the purchasing brief

Send the carton reference, photographs of the sealing area, packed mass, current tape details, observed failure and application or storage conditions. Include manual or machine use, estimated rolls and destination. Request sample terms and a written specification for the proposed alternative. A supplier's recycled-board product description is supporting information; your approved carton-and-tape trial remains the relevant purchasing record.
